Rod Andrew is a graduate of North Carolina State University with a Master of Science Degree and is a Registered Professional Engineer in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and Florida.
After graduate school, while completing his military requirement in the Civil Engineer Corps of the U.S. Navy, Mr. Andrew served as Project Engineer for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command at the Naval Base, Key West, Florida.
After fifteen years of practice with a Wilmington firm and twenty years as president of his own firm, Mr. Andrew joined forces with his son to create Andrew Consulting Engineers, P.C. The firm specializes in structural, marine, and forensic engineering and overall project management.
Mr. Andrew is experienced in many complex types of structural design including buildings, constructed of either reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry, or timber. He is also proficient in the design and analysis of marine type structures, wharfs, piers and docking facilities and in the design of reservoirs, tank and industrial facilities. He has designed utility systems for municipalities including water, sanitary sewer and storm drainage. He has designed civil structures including highways, bridges and has restored historical structures.
Mr. Andrew is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Professional Engineers of North Carolina, the American Concrete Institute and certified by the Structural Engineering Certification Board. In addition, he is a member of the American Arbitration Association, the National Academy of Forensic Engineers, a Fellow for the American Society of Civil Engineers, and PENC Fellow. Mr. Andrew is a past member of the Lower Cape Fear Water & Sewer Authority for the City of Wilmington and the Groundwater Task Force for New Hanover County and past president of the Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce. He served as a member of the Building Code Council for the State of North Carolina for twelve years and presided as chairman from 1996-1997. During his tenure he updated the Structural chapters of the North Carolina Building Code including wind designs. He developed Chapter 36: Piers, Bulkheads and Waterways, a first for the nation.
His significant designs include Seapath Towers, Dune Ridge and One South Lumina in Wrightsville Beach, the restoration of Fort Macon in North Carolina, the Center for Marine Science and Research Pier and the Cameron School of Business at UNCW; the Hilton Riverside, BB&T Building and the New Hanover County Museum in Wilmington , the Duke Marine Lab Research Pier in Beaufort and Trinity Center at Pine Knoll Shores.
PUBLICATIONS In 1967, while attending graduate school, Mr. Andrew published "Ultimate Strength of Rectangular Pre-stressed Concrete Under Concentric and Eccentric Loadings".
